Match report Blessed with glorious sunshine, it felt like the season was finally underway with a fixture at the evergreen Hampshire Hogs. It appeared, however, that the message hadn't reached all the Incogs, including (I hate to admit) the captain, as many struggled with the early start. Wood (Tony) dutifully stepped in to conduct the toss, for the Incogs to bat first, with a top order decided by arrival time.

A steady start was made, with Birtles reinventing himself as a batsman (again) top scoring with 38. Newcomer Lockwood looked like a strong addition to the Incogs contingent, but for a freak slip and a run out, may well have gone on to score more. It became an innings of starts, with no big partnership to stamp our authority on the game. Incog returnee Waite, Wood (Nick), Pearce, and Wood (Tony) all made starts and contributed to a slightly below-par 176 all out, albeit on a wicket that wasn't easy to get your eye in.

After an eventful start to the Hogs' response, with Birtles limping off after 7 deliveries, and an early run out by Pearce, the Hogs settled in to their chase. Although Khan struck relatively early, it was the spin combination of Malik, Wood (Tony) and Wood (Nick) that kept the control that we needed. With the Hogs ticking along, it was the big scalp of O'Connor, caught by Wood (Jamie), bowled Wood (Nick). In the rural setting, it was good that Wood could see the ball for the trees.

And so to the finale: with Malik's mammoth (and economic) spell of 15 overs taking the game deep; with just a few overs left in the day, and the required run rate up to around 7, it was time to roll the dice. While Boothroyd and Khan picked up wickets, they unforunately did so at the expense of a few too many runs, and the Hogs saw it home with an over to spare.
