Royal Navy CC Day One v Incogniti Cricket Club Incogniti CC on Thu 22 Jun 2017 at 11.30am
Incogniti Cricket Club Lost RN Win by 98 Runs
Match report
Weather washed out the whole of the first day of this fixture in 2016, so it was a pleasure to begin proceedings under bright blue skies. Incogniti skipper Ben Wakeford finally managed to persuade the Navy to return to the 2 day 2 innings declaration format (aka proper cricket) much to the delight of his team. He opted to field as he was a little worried about the strength of his team given that a couple of late cry offs meant that he was captaining a side which included a Royal Navy guest player and two other players he had never seen play before (Ben Birtles and Perry Pearce).
Early signs were good as the Navy guest George Bateman was clearly a good steady bowler, and the skipper himself supplied some pace form the other end. The breakthrough came when the skipper found some inswing and the dangerous looking Buscombe lost his off stump. Very shorlty afterwards first change Sam Bardon bowled a very similar, if surely slower, ball, which also removed a stump, (leading to perhaps unfair mumblings that the stump holes must have been well watered).
Having the Navy 30 odd for 2 was probably the only point in this game where Incogs could safely claim to be in front. The Navy, in the form of the explosive B Kohler-Cadmore ( brother of Tom Kohler-Cadmore of Yorkshire) and the steadier S Radford, took the game away from Incogs in very few overs. To be fair to the bowlers at the time, the Navy pair batted extremely well, and the two difficult(ish) chances they gave in the deep were not taken. Ben Birtles bowled particularly well under pressure for a 16 yr old and was the unlucky bowler on both occasions. Kohler-Cadmore finally holed out to Birtles for 95 and Radford (94) gave Bateman a deserved wicket in his second spell. However, despite Nav Malik picking up 2 wickets in an over (one regulation caught behind, one spectacular effort low to his right from the skipper to make up for being one of the culprits in the deep), the Navy got away and were able to declare on 235 off only 42,2 overs.
Incog’s reply was led by Gill and Birtles. Both showed great technique for their 53 and 31 respectively, and it was very nice to have a good solid start in this fixture for once. The Navy did not have the express pace they sometimes offer, but the bowlers were very good and this was a fine effort. The innings did need some impetus at this stage though, as neither of the openers had scored swiftly. Sam Bardon provided this with a fluent 31. Incogs overnight position c.100 behind, was satisfactory considering the Navy’s strong batting performance.
After the usual shenanigans in Portsmouth Incogs set out in the morning to smash the ball around for 10 overs before declaring with whatever they had. This they duly did, but unfortunately not much ‘smashing’ came off, with only Perry Pearce (26) really getting on top of the bowling. The skipper didn’t want to put the Navy off declaration cricket by overbatting in 1st innings, so he declared regardless 67 runs behind. Early wickets would be required.
Unfortunately they didn’t come. Classy looking left handed Aussie B Jeffries stroked the ball around before falling for 60,. This only brought in the dangerous Kohler-Cadmore back, and he again ruined the efforts of Incog’s bowling attack with 66 from about 35 balls. The Navy were able to declare after just 29 overs with a lead of nearly 250.
Incogs determined too be more positive in their 2nd innings, and, after losing two early wickets, they began to sense a sniff of a chance with Ben Birtles (35) and Sam Bardon (38) taming the Navy’s useful attack. At this point Kohler-Cadmore was introduced as a bowler of very decent spin, which he proceeded to use to rip out Incog’s middle order and guarantee himself the MOM award. Some late slogging was not enough to get Incogs anywhere near the Navy total, and they duly completed a well-deserved win by just short of 100 runs.
While not the penultimate over thriller that the last game over this format produced c.5 years previously, this was still a very fine advertisement for declaration cricket, which will hopefully persuade the Navy to keep the fixture in this format for next year. Particular mention to Ben Birtles, who came in at the last minute to help us out. He batted with maturity and skill well beyond his 16 years and is clearly a star in the making. If we are to play against players of Kohler-Cadmore’s class in future fixtures, we will need more players of Ben’s ability. In all seriousness I do ask the best Incogs to make themselves available for this jewel in the crown of our fixture list so as to give the Navy a real run for their money next year.
