Incogniti Cricket Club Lost by an innings and 3 runs.
Match report
Incogniti set out for this traditional early season encounter with a relatively young and talented side full of optimism. Was this to be the first time in many a year that the Royal Navy were to be beaten?
The answer to this question was not long in coming. Mason and Ridley immediately discovered that the usually placid Portsmouth wicket held a few more demons than usual after damp weather earlier in the week.
Both were dismissed within the half hour. Moeser and Howle soon followed and Daryani went first ball. Frantic phonecalls ensued as members off for a constitutional were told to return forthwith. Waite and Gardener slowed the collapse, and Wakeford smashed the spinner around for a while, but ducks for Dugdale and Scantleberry forced the skipper to declare 9 down as Furness had not been afforded the time to return. 77 all out was not what had been envisaged at the start of the day.
The day was not to improve much form this point. Wakeford and Scantleberry discovered that the wicket had dried out nicely. Hewett was dropped off Wakeford early on, but then offered no more glimmers of hope as he compiled a classy 136. At the other end the left handed Upton carved a slightly more agricultural 88 before retiring ‘hurt’. Waite and Dugdale were the pick of the Incogniti bowlers, but a solitary wicket for Dugdale and a run out were all the team had to show for a characterful fielding display under pressure. Ufortunatley, the Navy were still not finished for the day. Ridley fell for 17 after looking well set. Mason and Furness followed cheaply, and Wakeford and Scantleberry, the ‘nightwatchmen’ both went for ducks. The overnight situation was perilous in the extreme.
After the usual shenanigans the night before Incogs returned for day two with nothing much but pride to protect and hangovers to nurse. When Moeser and Hoyle fell early humiliation beckoned, but Waite and Daryani then embarked upon a remarkable partnership of nearly 100 as Waite compiled a classy 48 and Daryani smashed the Navy bowlers to all parts for a rapidfire 52. Amazingly the innings defeat was almost avoided. It was not to be, as the captain was bizarrely, and surely for the first time ever, again forced to declare 9 wickets down, as Norman was unable to get back from visiting a relative in hospital (who had had a turn) in time to bat.
Regardless the second day performance went some way to restoring pride and reputation, and the 20 20 game that followed, despite again being lost, was again competitive. The lesson taken for next year was to play more positively as the Navy bowlers seem to thrive on being on top, but may wilt somewhat under pressure.
