North London CC v Incogniti Cricket Club Incogniti CC on Mon 01 Aug 2016 at 1pm
Incogniti Cricket Club Won by 68 Runs
Match report
This fixture was nearly lost due to a clash with the Mid West Tour. This would have been a great shame as there have been a number of good games over the c.10 years the fixture has been in place. This year was no exception. Incogniti won the toss and elected to bat on a pitch which initially looked like a traditional slow and low North London pitch. Sye Razwi, who scored a fine century in this fixture last year, opened with Tom Mason. Immediately it was apparent that there was a little more 'juice' in the wicket than usual and, after a slow but steady start, Seth Malick managed to bowl an excellent leg cutter to clip the top of Sye's off stump. Tom 'Leaky' Mason was playing a very Tom like Innings. Huge powerful and expansive off side drives, mixed with some filth. In partnership with Neil Gill, playing in gritty northern mode, the 2nd wicket pair managed to get Incogniti towards the half century mark. Unfortunately Tom's dismissal, caught in the ring, sparked a rapid collapse. Malick had been replaced by NLCC veteran John Flood. Bowling full and straight Flood ripped out the heart of the classy Incogniti middle order, seeing off I Johns (ex NLCC 1st team captain), A Smith (Northants premier league), Neil Shrimpton (ex Enflied 1s) and, most surprisingly of all, the mighty Dugdale first ball. With the Innings on the brink of ruin captain Wakeford and Gill, who had watched the destruction from the other end, set about rebuilding. Slowly the score was inched towards 100, but Gill was then bowled by the impressive young left armer Tommy Peglar. This brought in Dave Boothroyd who immediatley took a liking to NLCC's young spinners (Flood had been replaced by the leg spin of Taraffa Holford). A rapid fire 31 which was followed up by a similarly destructive 28* from Arnould after Wakeford was unluckily run out backing up meant that Incogniti had dragged themselves to 150, which was probably about a par score on the increasingly damp wicket.
While Incogniti's star batsmen had missed out, thier main bowlers were not to be denied. Wakeford looked to be in trouble when NLCC's 1s opener Hussain Shabbir smashed his third ball back over his head for six, but the reply was almost instant as he had Shabbir caught brilliantly at fine leg by Boothroyd attempting the hook. This dismissal was then bizarrely repeated two more times as the NLCC batsmen came out swinging. Boothroyd, having taken all three catches with aplomb, then got into the action with three wickets of his own, removing the dangerous Rosson in the process. The ever reliable Tom Whyte was whistled up to finish off the tail, Shrimpton took a couple of excellent catches, and NLCC had, after at one stage being 46-6, won an entertaining game by the unlikely margin of 68 runs. Many a tale and quite a few beers were shared after the game, with umpires P Furness and G whickman joining in after doing a fine job officiating the match. Thanks also to Claire Whickman and Beyrl who both scored the match. Fingers crossed the Mid West tour will remain in week two of August so that this fixture can continue.
