Another damp morning in May and the usual accusation from former pupil Furness that the covers must have been left off - it must be Mill Hill School!

Incogs lost the toss and were unsurprisingly asked to bat on what looked like a tricky surface. So it proved as u-15 opening attack Cicale and Plummer bowled superbly, gaining swing and seam to beat the bat regularly. Furness and Indy were back in the pavilion with just 3 on the board. Assad and guest Atchinson staged a minor recovery, but just when the ship appeared to be steadied, Atchison had to retire hurt having tweaked his back. How the students would have chuckled seeing another "old man" hobble off - and Atchison was our second-youngest player! Johns and Issitt (another guest) made double figures, but the highest score of the innings was made by skipper Wakeford, whose binary approach of block or bash gained him 41 runs batting at 10.

The final tally of 163 from 40 overs gave at least a glimmer of hope if the wicket was to behave similarly in the afternoon.

We were treated to a fine opening spell from Issitt which included possibly the ball of the season to dismiss Pindoria (inswinger that pitched leg and seamed out to uproot off-stump, leaving the leg-bail wondering where his mate had gone!). However, the pitch had dried and the Mill Hill boys batted very well. Smith, who would probably have been our most dangerous bowler in the conditions unfortunately injured his shoulder and could only complete 3 overs. Tom Whyte and Ilija bowled well without really hitting their straps, and Becker, Isadore and Johal all batted positively to chase down the target with an hour to spare.

The "old boys" retired to the local pub to regroup and plot a win against the schoolmasters in July. Thanks to Mill Hill School as always for their excellent hospitality, though the skipper will be wary in future of texts from the head coach saying they had a "very weak side this year" - this appeared far from the truth!
