Incogniti Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets
Match report
Incogs won the toss and elected to bat first on a green but drying wicket. Mill Hill School's opening bowlers immediately hit a good line and lenght, with skipper Joe Wray picking up Furness LBW in his third over. Hoyle steadied the innings with Hocking, but the wicket proved a little slow for the two Aussies. Hocking was caught on the drive, whilst Wray's excellent spell accounted for Hoyle, playing on for 11. Gill edged a rising delivery to the keeper leaving the Incogs in trouble at 42-4 from 12 overs.
Ashley Leat and Padhani then put on 80 runs to give Incogs the chance of a competitive total, with Padhani falling when trying to up the rate. Again it was Wray who benefitted, and two more jaffas accounted for Bowry and Harte as Incogs searched for quick runs. A fine spell from the Mill Hill School captain, who finished with 6-48 from 19 excellent overs. Meanwhile, Leat batted calmly and extremely competently for his 75, holding the innings together and playing with an ease that no other batsman throughout the day could match. Wakeford provided the impetus Incogs were searching for hitting the final four balls of the innings for 6 - no mean feat at Europes largest natural oval (according to Mill Hill Old Boy P. Furness at least). With the ball seemingly lost, Wakeford neglected to take on the challenge of 6-sixes, instead declaring to leave the schoolboys 197 to win.
Chris Cropley, the third of our Australian contingent, opened the bowling and kept a lid on the scoring rate. Wakeford from the other end continued what looked to be a fine day for him, taking a wicket with his first ball. A second followed courtesy of a good catch from Padhani, leaving the schoolboys in trouble at 18-2 from 8 overs.
There then followed 3-4 over bursts from Dugdale, Gill, Hocking, Padhani, Bowry and Harte, but none could break the fourth-wicket partnership of Harley (56) and Kilbourn (73). Theirs was a fine stand of 120 runs and through calm strokeplay and quick running they were able to bring the schoolboys to within 60 of the target. Ashley Leat finally took the wicket of Kilbourn, well stumped by Hoyle, and with 9 overs left Incogs sniffed an improbable win. South African "Mature Student" Botha, however, had other ideas, hitting 40 from 30 balls to see them home. It was fitting that Joe Wray was there at the end after his fine spell that set up the relatively small target.
Another fine match between these two sides, and great credit to the schoolboys for winning this year without Rossington (4 centureies in 5 games previously), who did make a brief appearance on the boundary before rushing off to play for Middlesex in a 20-20.
Thanks as always to Clare Wickman for scoring and Gordon for umpiring so that Furness could take on his old school.
